Wild Things: Kusamono Workshop with Young Choe
June 21st 2026 -
Where: Classroom, Arboretum Visitor Center
When: 1 – 3pm
Kusamono is the Japanese art of creating small, naturalistic plant compositions that celebrate the beauty of grasses, wildflowers and other seasonal plants. The Japanese word kusamono is comprised of two characters meaning “grass” and “thing”, referring to humble wild plants. Often displayed alongside bonsai as an accent, kusamono stands on its own as a complete expression, emphasizing simplicity, seasonality, and a sense of place.
Join esteemed kusamono artist Young Choe—who teaches the art of kusamono worldwide and has exhibited her work at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, among others—for a hands-on experience immersed in this Japanese botanical artform. Students will learn characteristic kusamono styles, methods for creation, display techniques, and care. Then they’ll put their knowledge to use, creating kusamono to take home and enjoy.
The workshop is limited to 12 participants. Registration and fee required. Container, soil, plants, moss, and tools will be provided.
