These are the fruit and flower of the common sweetshrub, Calycanthus floridus.
This native shrub is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9 and produces maroon red flowers in late spring that have a fruity, penetrating fragrance reminiscent of pineapple or strawberries. You can find sweetshrub in the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum and in the Fern Valley Native Plant Collection.
