This is 'Jindai' Tatarian Aster, Aster tataricus 'Jindai'.
This herbaceous perennial has small purple flowers and a yellow center and
is attractive to butterflies. Large leaves (to 2') emerge in the spring and provide
a bold backdrop for earlier blooming perennials. In the fall numerous flower stalks
rise to 3 to 5 feet. Plants prefer full sun and the soil should be moist. 'Jindai' Tatarian
Aster is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9.
Flowering is later than many other asters and this species often provides brilliant
color until frost. The cultivar was discovered growing at the Jin-Dai Botanical
Garden in Tokyo, Japan and can be found in the bed located near the parking lot in
Asian Collections.
