Answer to the Front Page Picture of the Week Question
for October 23rd - October 30th, 2003

This is the fruit of the common yew, Taxus baccata.
Although yew is indeed a common shrub that can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 7,
the seeds and their red fleshy arils are seldom noticed. You can find yews near the Administration Building
and in the Gotelli Collection of Dwarf and Slow Growing Conifers.
