Answer to the Front Page "Picture of the Week" Question
for May 15th - May 22nd, 2003

This is a picture of a rugosa rose, Rosa rugosa.
You can find this plant in the National Herb Garden.
This rose produces large fruits called rose hips that are edible and high in vitamin C.
It is native to coastal dunes in Japan and is considered an invasive plant in
seashore areas of the northeastern United States. The flowers have an intense clove
fragrance and the foliage is resistant to black spot.
