Answer to the Front Page Picture of the Week Question for February 18th - February 26th, 2004
This is heavenly bamboo, Nandina domestica.
Heavenly bamboo may be heavenly, but it's not really a bamboo at all-it is in
the barberry family. The bright red fruits are displayed in large panicles
at the tips of upright branches, and they persist longer than most berries
because birds and wildlife feed on them only when other berries are gone.
Heavenly bamboo can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. You
can find heavenly bamboo in the Friendship Garden and in the Asian Collections.
