Look at the sign underneath the statue of Demeter:
The sign tells you who the artist is who made the statue, why the statue is there (given “in memory of” means the person has died and people want to remember that person with something like a statue), who gave the statue, and when they gave it. It doesn’t tell you who Kay Lahr was, though. She was an active member of the garden club that helped pay for the beautiful garden that surrounds Arbor House. One of Kay Lahr’s friends told us that she was a “darling little English lady” who studied botany (the science of plants) and who loved the Arboretum. She was one of the first volunteers to give guided tours of the Arboretum in the 1950s and continued to volunteer until she died when she was in her 80s. Her friend told us this story: Kay was so faithful about coming to help, that even when her driver (Kay did not know how to drive) could not bring her to the Arboretum one day, she took three buses and walked several blocks from the bus stop to get here. And she did this after just having eye surgery! Her friends loved her so much that after she died they bought the statue of Demeter to place in the garden so they’d always remember her.
