The National Herb Garden is one of Washington, D.C.’s botanical treasures. A joint partnership of the National Arboretum and the Herb Society of America, the garden was constructed and dedicated in 1980. It is the largest designed herb garden in the nation and includes annual, perennial, and woody herbal plants. Herbs serve important roles in cultures throughout the world. They flavor our food, heal our bodies, and invigorate our senses. They are woven into our daily lives, often in ways we don’t immediately recognize.
Millions of people from around the globe have walked the paths of the National Herb Garden, passing by plants they have never seen before, or perhaps, ones completely familiar to them. Each plant has a story to share for those willing to “listen”. It is a garden where learning, combined with personal experience, creates a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the world in which we live.
This virtual tour of the U.S. National Arboretum's National Herb Garden takes you through all of the major garden features, including: the Entrance Garden, the Knot Garden, the Historic and Species Rose Garden, and the ten Theme Gardens.
